The Kenneth Lattman Foundation Lecture Series at the Bill Cosford Cinema features seven films built on innovative storytelling and created by some of the brightest filmmakers today. The series brings audiences "back to the movie theater" to watch exceptional films together. Each screening is followed by a discussion with University of Miami film experts, distinguished industry VIPs, the audience, and other guests who explore the scholarly, professional, and artistic merits of each film. Join us for this dynamic movie-going experience.

Cold Weather
Three and a half stars from The Boston Globe. Cold Weather is not your usual detective story. After abandoning a promising academic career in forensic science, a self-styled Sherlock Holmes, Doug (Cris Lankenau), returns to Portland to live with his more responsible big sister Gail (Trieste Kelly Dunn). He lands a dead-end job working in an ice factory, but soon finds an opportunity to use his passion and skill in detective work when his ex-girlfriend, Rachel (Robyn Rikoon) goes missing. Enlisting a team of ramshackle slacker-sleuths, Doug leads his team down a complex trail of clues to discover the mysterious truth about what happened to Rachel. "It's pretty wonderful," said Ty Burr, of The Boston Globe.

The HR manager of Israel's largest industrial bakery is in trouble. When an employee is killed from a suicide bombing and her body remains unclaimed, the bakery is held responsible. In an effort to save the reputation of the business and prevent the publication of an offensive article, the self-centered HR manager is sent on a mission to make things right. A mission, that could quite possibly, change his life.

The Time That Remains is both a humorous and heartbreaking film composed of autobiographical episodes from the life of the acclaimed director of Divine Intervention, Elia Suleiman. The film takes you on a journey through the life of a Palestinian family living as a minority in their own homeland. Waste Land
The winner of the acclaimed 2010 Sundance Film Festival's Audience Award in the World Cinema Documentary category, critics have called Waste Land "the Slumdog Millionaire of documentaries." An inspiring and deeply moving portrait of renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.

There he photographs an eclectic band of "catadores"—self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz's initial objective was to "paint" the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. (Screened in Portuguese & English w/ English subtitles)

Lula, the Son of Brazil
Brazil's official submission for the 2011 Academy Awards, Lula, the Son of Brazil is a controversial biopic about current outgoing Brazilian President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The film narrates Lula's life, from his birth to his mother's death at age 35.

Receiving both positive and negative critiques for its portrayal of President Lula, the film has built a buzz. Special guest, producer Paula Barreto (of the famous Brazilian filmmaking family), will be available after the December 7 screening for what is sure to be interesting panel discussion.
