A young mermaid longs for an existence beyond the water in this classic children's film. She eventually ventures to the surface where she falls in love with a human. A love rejected by patriarchal order, she is forced into a dangerous pact with an evil sea witch that results in body modification and the loss of her voice. Despite what could be described as “unnatural,” love conquers all in this joyous update of Hans Christian Andersen’s melancholic source material. Beneath its surface, THE LITTLE MERMAID fully embraces queer themes of shame, longing and acceptance.
